Bill Rehnquist is Deep Throat
Oh - and before I go home - this little tidbit forwarded to me at wonkette.com - Apparently Bob Woodward is on record as saying that "Deep Throat" of Watergate fame is close to death and that an obit is prepared.
My call, inspired by wonkette - Chief Justice William Rehnquist. There isn't a lot of web speculation about this, but his fingers are in a lot of Watergate pies without really getting him very messy. Interesting. (It would have been more interesting if Bush 1.0 was, but he looked pretty spry last night on the Super Bowl.)
And I keep thinking Nixon is dead... Nixon is America.

I doubt this, Jason. Read this article from Slate... I agree that it would be really really interesting if it was William Rehnquist though.

You are right, on BOTH counts. It's a neat little conspiracy theory to connect the Chief Justice in there to the biggests presidential scandal of all time.

I'm not so sure that Noah's point really ends the possibility that Rehnquist is Deep Throat. I consider the Rehnquist theory here and respond to Noah's Slate article here

I like your comment about the fact that the secret has been so jealously guarded. Why bother if it's just Fred Fielding? And what of the newly appointed Supreme Court justice that knows something is going on, but yet knows going public about it in 1972 could jeopardize the entire separation of powers in the federal government? Thanks for tempting me back on to this theory. I remain, an interested but rather ill-informed spectator to the debate.
