Global Warming

We finally got some snow last night... Not a lot. People are talking about global warming - I don't think this is global warming.

I do think we're in danger of global warming, but people have short short memories. Two and three years ago, we had some of the worst winters on record. I think there's some disturbing trends worldwide that indicate problems, but for global warming to responsible for such a giant leap in temperatures in one year is just plain silly.

I find it alarming how crazy people get without having the facts. It's easier to just pick someone or something and put your trust in them, rather than sift through all the nasty facts and truly think for yourself. (I know people who are sure global warming will destroy us all. I also know people who are sure it is all bunk.) It's also impossible to devote the time necessary to think for yourself all of the time.

To be a good citizen, you have to do the best you can at being a constant thinker, and have a willingness to change your mind about a topic. To me, the wisest people are the wishy-washiest. You have to try everything before you know something, and before you can get to everything, the world changes and you have to start over again. Those people have a zest for life, stay young at heart, and probably die happy. As soon as you have a firm belief in something, anything, you are lost, old, and die as a miserable old fart.

Sorry for the philosophy... The most annoying thing in the world is people thinking they are right, and I'm sure I sound like it often enough. Well, maybe not. ;)

Really. And being naive to the facts is not a good excuse either. Perfect example - http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/6310869.stm.

I'm sure you realize that global warming adjusts and transfers weather patterns to pockets of cold and warm areas. Also, do yourself a favor and look at the research on the recorded melting of glaciers and especially the entire island of Greenland. The global impact of Greenlands main glaciers melting would be catastrophic but, hey, that's just science talking.

If the Artic is melting and Antarctic is growing an inch a day, then maybe the earth is titling a different angle to the sun. Did anyone think of that before?

I apologize for not approving comments for publishing until now. I have been away from my blog for a bit...)

To clarify:

My intention was not to claim global warming was not real. I do in fact read reports on the studies, and I believe those reports. I am a fervent admirer of those working to stop global warming, and I think the world would be a better place had the Supreme Court made a better decision about our next president in late 2000. (Gore 08!!!)

My beef is with people on both sides of the debate that are truly naive to the facts - the ones that see a warm winter day and exclaim "Global Warming" like Chicken Little, or the ones that don't believe in "science".

People need to take it upon themselves to think hard about their impact on the environment and take steps before it is too late. Complaining about an odd weather pattern and chalking it up to "Global Warming" before you hop into your SUV on your way to Wal-Mart is not helpful.
